Wooden pergolas

Wooden pergolas are the conventional option, and their traditional and timeless style are perfect for any outdoor space. They do, however require considerable maintenance as they are susceptible to fading and rotting.

With somewhat limited maintenance, a wooden pergola typically lasts about five years, although you can improve its lifespan to 10 to 12 years through annual cleaning, staining and sealing.

Vinyl pergolas

Vinyl pergolas are a relatively new concept. As opposed to wood, vinyl doesn’t rot and doesn’t require as much maintenance. The issues come from heavy snow, however as it can cause the vinyl pergola so sag. The variation in temperature can also lead to cracks and gouges. Vinyl pergolas are rumoured to last a lifetime, but we expect them to last between 15 and 20 years.

Fibreglass Pergolas

Fiberglass pergolas are also a very plausible option. Sharing a similar look to vinyl, they have little maintenance needs and will not rust or corrode. They also hold paint extremely well and don’t absorb moisture – the number one cause of paint cracking and peeling.

They have an exceptionally long lifespan, also lasting between 15 and 20 years.

Aluminium pergolas

Seen as a super durable, low-hassle and a highly attractive option, aluminium pergolas can offer the stability of wood with a clean elegance, whilst being practically maintenance free.

Like vinyl and fibreglass, there’s suggestions that aluminium pergolas can also last a lifetime. We believe they will hold up for at least 15 to 20 years.
